New toy: SonyEricsson K600i

SonyEricsson K600i UMTS mobile phoneAlthough I still like the Treo 650, it has some shortcomings that needed fixing. The most important of those is that the Treo doesn’t support UMTS. So I now own a K600i which I got really cheap. Coming from the Treo it’s like entering a completely new world. Some niceties first: Although it doesn’t look too stunning, the K600i is a nice phone. The buttons are large enough for my hands, the display is very nice and the sound quality is better than on the Treo. The integrated 1.3 Megapixel camera however doesn’t really convince me. The pictures contain a lot of noise even if taken in broad daylight. Bluetooth connectivity gives a mixed impression, too. While it was no problem to pair the K600i with both, my Jabra bt250v headset and the iBook, it will work flawlessly only when connected to just one device. Syncing addresses and calendar entries with the iBook while the Jabra is connected is almost impossible because of the data rate dropping to a meager 6 kByte/s. Once the Jabra is disconnected, everything is up to normal speeds when syncing. I also like the integrated mail client. It supports the IMAP protoctol and thus allows me to even manage my mail while on the road. Whether it supports the IDLE command I haven’t checked yet. And I had to find out that I can’t test UMTS because my SIM card is too old. At least that’s what I was told by the O2 hotline. Which makes me wonder for the SIM card is just three months old and sports the “UMTS ready” logo. Well, they’re sending me a new one free of charge so I don’t really complain.

  1. Thomas says:

Does it have the “energy saver” option within the Bluetooth options? Setting it to “off” on my SE V600i improved the Bluetooth speed using a Jabra while Syncing with iSync.

  2. Yes it does have the “energy saver” option. However, as far as I understand the docs, this option has to be turned off to be able to connect the K600i to more than one Bluetooth device at the same time. Thus, it is off on my phone, too, and the results I stated above were measured when the “energy saver” option was off. Will investigate further, though, because I intend to use the phone as an UMTS modem and as such, speeds of 6-8 kByte/s don’t make much sense.
