I just finished installing VMware Server using Ubuntu 64-Bit Server as base operating system. While the installation was quite easy, I seem to be unable to migrate virtual machines created using VMware Workstation 5.5 to their new home. The only thing that will happen is a black screen once the virtual machine starts. All of the virtual machines I tried were installations of Windows XP, single file virtual disks with a size of 6 GByte. I already tried splitting them up using vmware-vdiskmanager but that didn’t help. Suggestions, anyone? Or did anyone of you successfully move a virtual machine over to VMware Server?
[Update:]I finally found a way to make migration work. Instead of just copying the files over and doing an “Open existing VM”, you’ll have to create a new VM instead. Using “Custom Options” you then change all settings according to your wishes. When it comes to creating the virtual disk you select “Use exsiting …”. This method works for all the VMs I tested so far.
Es kommt darauf an, wie Du die VM mit VMware WS erstellt hast, ob Du sie später einfach so in VMware Server öffnen kannst.
Wenn Du da beim VM-Wizard “Typical” (und dann ein OS auswählst), ist diese VM-Config im Server nicht nutzbar, weil dann das neue Format 5.x genutzt wird. Nur wenn Du “Custom” im Wizard auswählst und dann “Legacy”, klappt die Verwendung im VMware Server…:-)
Hmm. Warum geht’s dann, wenn ich nur die Disk übernehme? Gut, da muss ich dann im Server auch über “Custom” gehen, aber an der Disk an sich ändert er dabei nix – und die ist ja eigentlich im VM 5.x Format.

Ich kenn die Agentur – und den dortigen Ansprechpartner – auch ganz gut ;) Und es ist ja nicht so, dass ich nicht schon einen VMware-Techniker am Telefon gehabt hätte. Direkt funktionieren tut’s trotzdem nicht, aber immerhin weiß ich ja jetzt, wie ich die virtuellen Möhrchen ans Laufen kriege.
Das Disk-Format hat sich nicht geändert, wenn ich mich recht entsinne. Nur das Config-Format…
Schlaumichel, die. Wahrscheinlich würde das die “Import”-Funktion korrigieren. Nur leider kann ich die nicht nutzen, da die nur verfügbar ist, wenn man den Client auf der Kiste ausführt, auf der auch der Server läuft. Da es sich dabei aber um einen Ubuntu-Server ohne X Window System handelt, hab’ ich da wohl eher schlechte Karten ;) Weia.
